External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday (March 21) announced the launch of ‘Operation Indrawati’, the main aim of which is to evacuate Indian nationals from Haiti to the neighboring Dominican Republic, The Hindu reported.
As a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its citizens abroad, Jaishankar confirmed the successful evacuation of 17 people on the opening day of the operation.

The decision to launch the operation comes amid growing security concerns in Haiti, including gang violence and targeted attacks on critical infrastructure to pressure Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign.
Since India does not have a diplomatic mission in Haiti, its embassy in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is responsible for monitoring the situation.

Reference to the crisis in Haiti:
Haiti is a former French colony that gained independence in 1804. Haiti makes up a third of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The remaining two-thirds of the island is called the Dominican Republic, a former Spanish colony.
Since independence, Haiti has been plagued by instability and violence. It is one of the poorest countries in the Caribbean. Under the brutal rule of dictator François Duvalier, ruthless and violent gangs developed in the country, eventually becoming powerful enough to challenge state power.
In 2021, then-President Jovenal Moise, who was accused of corruption, was assassinated in his official residence by unknown assailants. Since then, Prime Minister Ariel Henry has served as the country’s interim president.
To restore order and control in Haiti, the United Nations Security Council in October 2023 authorized a multinational security force led by Kenya to maintain peace and order.
However, powerful criminal gangs control the country and the capital Port-au-Prince. They staged violent demonstrations in the capital, demanding Ariel Henry’s resignation.
There is anarchy everywhere in the country and the name government has no value. Gangs are literally taking over the capital and killing large numbers of people.
