Heatwave ALERT In Odisha, Bihar And Parts of South India During Next Few Days: A red heat wave warning has been issued for Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Ganga-West Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red heat alert for Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Ganga-West Bengal as severe heat wave prevailed in many parts of the country on Monday. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for the northeastern states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Gujarat.

“Heatwave conditions are likely in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand in the next four days till May 1, after which heat wave conditions will prevail at isolated places in the region. May 2,” the IMD wrote in its April 28 bulletin.

Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions will continue over coastal areas of West Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Kerala, Mahi and Karnataka till May 2.

What is a Heatwave?

According to the IMD, a heat wave occurs when the air temperature reaches a level that poses a risk to human health upon exposure. It is usually defined quantitatively by a range of temperatures in a region, either precisely or relative to the average temperature.

A “Heatwave” is known when the maximum temperature at a location reaches 40 degrees Celsius or more in the plains and 30 degrees Celsius or more in the highlands.

“Over the next five days, many places in Gangetic West Bengal, parts of Odisha, and isolated areas of sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to experience heat wave or severe heat wave,” the IMD said.

“Hail is likely at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada on 26th, West Madhya Pradesh on 26th and 27th and East Madhya Pradesh on 27th April 2024,” it said.

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places over Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam on Friday.

Rainfall warning over northeast India:

“Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also likely to experience rain/snow accompanied by scattered rain and thundershowers during this period.” The Met Office said that moderate to heavy rains are likely between 26 and 30 April 2024.
“Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur over Sikkim on April 28, 2024,” the message added.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to experience heavy rain at isolated places on April 29 and 30.
