Bishop to Retire After 20 Years At The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte – Charlotte, NC. – Longtime Bishop Peter J. The Diocese of Charlotte announced that Jugis, 67, is retiring for health reasons and that Pope Francis has appointed an Atlanta convent to lead the growing diocese. In his place, Father Michael T.

Martin. Bishop Jugis submitted his retirement request in Rome last June, citing a chronic but fatal kidney ailment that had made it difficult for him to lead long liturgies and travel the vast diocese for 46 years. Bishop Jugis recently celebrated his 20th anniversary and his 40th anniversary as bishop.

He will serve as administrator of the diocese until Martin is named bishop-elect in May, after which he will serve as bishop emeritus. Bishop-elect Martin, 62, is a traditionalist and priest of the Order of Friars Minor at St. Philip Benici Parish in Jonesboro, Georgia. He has deep roots in Catholic education — he has worked as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in Baltimore, New York, and Durham — and attends 20 Charlotte schools at record enrollment times.

He was installed as the fifth bishop of Charlotte on May 29 at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville.

Bishop Jugis introduced Bishop-Elect Martin at a press conference Tuesday morning. Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Vatican’s apostolic nuncio (envoy) to the United States, was in Washington DC on Tuesday. Recruitment has been announced. Bishop-elect Martin answered several questions about his new role as diocesan leader, including future goals for supporting the poor and marginalized, and the continued growth of parishes and schools.

Immediately following the press conference, Bishop-elect Martin made a surprise visit to the Catholic Charities Food Pantry, which is open every Tuesday and Thursday at the Charlotte Diocese Pastoral Center. There he greeted the volunteers and workers who distribute food to hundreds of needy people every week and prayed for a family who came in for emergency food aid.
